One of the unique planes in my collection is a user made plow plane that is made of steel pieces bolted together. It is all rather ingenious.

There are 7 pieces of flat steel and 4 bolts are used to make the plane. The front skate is bent at a right angle at the top to hold the knob. While the rear skate was made from a triangular piece of which the top is bent in a ‘U’ shape to support the blade. The lever cap has been shaped.
A 5/16 in rod holds the fence and acts as the pivot point for the lever cap. The rod is threaded at one end with a nut holding the fence in place. There isn’t a holding screw on the rod.
There is a wooden front knob, held on by a screw fitted from underneath.
The blade is an old file – ground down to remove the file surface and then shaped.
The blade is held in place by a knurled thumbscrew through the lever cap.
The whole plane is finished with a heavy coat of black paint.
I haven’t tried to use this plane, but the blade is sharp and it looks like it could be used. My biggest concern would be that the position of the fence would change due to the arm not being restrained in any way.
