Building Bridges

My granddaughters like playing with the wooden train track we have. This is a very large collection of pieces which allows some quite interesting track arrangements.

This is just a small proportion of the track we have. I built it for our youngest granddaughter who is just 22 months old.

She loves putting the trains on the bridge and letting them roll down, so I include as many bridges as I can.

I got most of the pieces of track through Facebook Marketplace and in one batch were a couple of bridge approaches, but no bridge that fitted onto them

The 2 bridge approaches are seen in this photo.

I decided to make the bridge to go with them and had a piece of pine that was close to the required size.

Using my thicknesser, I brought it down to the right track width, then on the bandsaw I cut it to shape. To get the opening I used a forstner bit to cut a circular hole and then straightened the edges by cutting with the bandsaw. I created the tracks using my router. Finally to allow the bridge approaches to join on, I drilled a vertical hole at each end and opened it up to form a keyhole on the bandsaw.

A little bit of sanding and the new bridge was ready to be part of the set.
