In my blog posts about our new table, I mentioned chairs. The process of obtaining donor parts for the table also resulted in the acquisition of 26 dining chairs. If you add that to what we had already, it gives a total of 38 chairs. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would want 38 dining chairs for their home, especially when they consisted of 5 different styles.
As a starter, we will hopefully divest ourselves of the 6 that go with our old dining table (Facebook Marketplace & Gumtree willing).
When we bought the 3m table that provided the table-top for our new table, it came with 12 matching chairs. My first thought that we would just dispose of these chairs with their worn black woodwork, tatty maroon upholstery and smell of cigarette smoke. However, my wife sat in one and decided that they were comfortable and far better for when sitting around the table after a meal and chatting or playing games.
So, yet another project – doing up 12 chairs.
A little experimentation showed that sanding them back to bare wood was not too onerous. And structurally, they were generally in good condition – with only 2 requiring any re-gluing of joins. In fact they had quite a nice grain.
The upholstery (seat & back) was a bit more complicated than I was willing to tackle myself. A bit of search and I found Glen at Leisure Coast Upholstery who took on the job and reupholstered them at $100 per chair (including the fabric of our choice).
I stripped the black paint from each chair, sanded them and stained them to match the table. Then using the wonderful new looking seats and backs I reassembled each chair.

We now have 12 matched chairs to go with our new big table. Now I just have to divest most of the other chairs!
