Lots of Work In Progress

I’m about to head off on a 6 week road trip – but leaving behind lots of work restoring wooden planes.

As a result of my recent buys I still have a number of wooden planes to identify, clean and repair (some of them).

A number of the ones I have are missing wedges or irons. I intend having a go at making new irons using irons from Stanley No.4’s which are readily available. My idea is to initially split these down the middle and then cut them into blanks. Having done that I’ll sit them in the plane and scribe the shape of the moulding before working on shaping the iron to match.

I’d appreciate any comments on the feasibility (or stupidity) of this idea. Also would value any ideas on how to cheaply source irons or other ways to make them.

Most have these plane bodies have cost me less than $10 (benefit of buying bulk lots) so I really don’t want to spend a lot on new irons.
