Maximising Workshop Space

As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, my workshop is our garage with a floorspace of around 57 sq metres – quite a large area but also needed for general storage, parking for my wife’s car and space for my larger floor based tools. So to be able to handle any project I’m working on I need floorspace and flexibility in the location of equipment

To best provide flexibility in the layout, nearly all my large equipment is mounted on lockable rollers, so can be easily moved around to create space or to become a focal point. The diagram below gives an idea of how I have it setout.

I initially had my handheld power tools in boxes, but when I needed a tool it required lifting the box off the shelf and opening it. As a more efficient idea I changed the storage to a pigeon hole approach where all the tools were visible and I can just grab the ones I want. My drills are separate and all hung together with a charger station and drill bits adjacent to them.

You can also see in the right hand picture that my consumables (nails, screws, nuts, bolts etc.) are also readily at hand along with labelled storage for all the bits and pieces that may come in useful at some time.

Finally my non-electric hand tools are stored on 3 shadow boards which are easily accessible with the location for each tool clearly marked..
