A number of my wooden molding planes date back to the early 19th century. Unfortunately on some of them it has been hard to determine who the actual maker was so I cannot be sure of their date of manufacture.
Possibly one of my oldest is this No 13 size (7/8 in.) Round. The blade is still sharp and the body is in good condition.
Hidden under an owners mark is the stamp of the maker G.Robinson. Why an owner would want to blank out the makers name evades me.
From ‘Jane Rees, Goodman’s British Planemakers 4th Edition, 2020, Astragal Press’ – George Robinson operated in York from 1820 till 1830.
This would put this plane at around 200 years old. I imagine it would be near impossible to buy a tool today that would still be usable in 200 years.
I do have several other planes that may be slightly older, but there is enough uncertainty about the makers stamp that I can’t be sure.
