Keeping Up With Grandchildren during Covid

One of the difficulties of Covid-19 restrictions has been the inability to spend face-to-face time with our family (3 sons, their wives & 3 grand-daughters).

One son lives in the same local government area, so we have been able to go for a weekly walk with him and his wife – but walking in pairs and swapping over who we walk with at the halfway point.

Another son and his wife are in a different area and while they were not initially in lockdown & have just left lockdown again – we haven’t been able to get together with them.

And our oldest son who has 3 daughters lives in one of the so-called hotspots with even tighter restrictions, so we haven’t been able to visit them for quite a few months.

One way around it has been a family Zoom conference every Saturday night were we catch up and have an ongoing trivia quiz.

And my wife has been doing weekly book readings with our grand-daughters.

I wanted to do something for the girls, so I asked them to tell me their favourite animals. Esther (the oldest a 4 years old) nominated the animal for Flo (youngest at 8 months old). Then I designed a simple jigsaw puzzle and used my laser engraver to transfer the image to wood. A short session with the scroll saw turned that image into the puzzle pieces and my wife added a little bit of colour before I varnished it and then mailed it to the girls.
