Rocking Horse Restoration (Part 4)

It’s been a little while since I reported on the progress of the rocking horse.

Today I picked it up from my mother-in-law’s with the painting of the body complete. We weren’t aiming for a reproduction of the original Roebuck design. Instead she had the brief of using her own artistic flair and judgement on what would look good.

I’m really happy with the end result. It is basically subtle grey shading with a dappled pattern on the neck and flanks. This was done over a base colour of Dulux Highgate (white with a slight grey tint). It is easier to let pictures tell the story, so here it is:

So now I have the following jobs to do:

  • Coat it with 2 coats of clear floor varnish.
  • Fit the black saddle and red tartan saddle cloth.
  • Attach the bridle, halter and stirrups.
  • Attach the black mane and tail.
  • Suspend it on the frame.

Then it will be time to turn it over to the grand-daughters for test rides.
